An old man in the twilight of his life, hauling a sled of juniper sticks, trekking home alone with his thoughts on the frozen Baltic Sea in the archipelago of Kustavi, southwestern Finland circa 1860.

You can read the first four pages right there (i didn't actually update them for the 2nd edition so they might be slightly different), in the screenshots bar. For the rest of the 28 pages you'll have to download the PDF. Or have a friend print it to you? Don't waste paper like that, though. Unless you like the feel of turning pages.

Content warning: This story contains depictions of death, distress, and dysfunctional families.

What?

This is my translation of the short story Jäällävaeltaja (lit. Wanderer on Ice) by Volter Kilpi (1874-1939). It is from the second book in his Archipelago-trilogy, which is an extensive depiction of life and people in late 1800s archipelago of Kustavi, where Kilpi was born and lived his childhood.

The story and its events should be well understandable and enjoyable as is, if somewhat heavy to read due to Kilpi's extensively blossoming prose. Some context is invariably lost however, due to the fact that most of the readers aren't Finnish, don't know the dialect of Kustavi, weren't around in the 1800s sailing community, or all of the above.

But, I'm not scholarly or rigorous enough to bother with an annotated version, so any oddities you will have to live with.
